Save7 is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about organ and tissue donation in South Africa. Our mission is to educate the public on the importance of organ donation and to increase the number of registered donors, thereby saving lives.
The name “Save7” reflects the potential impact one organ donor can have. A single donor can save up to seven lives by donating their heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and intestines.
You can register as an organ donor by visiting our registration page. The process is quick and straightforward, taking less than a minute to complete. Upon registration, you can also leave a personalized message for your next of kin, creating a legally recognizable testament of your commitment to donate your organs.
Yes, Save7 is committed to protecting your personal information. We store your data securely and use it solely for the advancement of organ donor awareness, in compliance with the South African Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI-2013).
Save7 offers support groups for patients undergoing dialysis and those awaiting transplants. These groups provide mentorship, counseling, education on managing health conditions, skills training, and sustenance, including meals and coffee during sessions.
The Life Pod is an initiative led by Stellenbosch University medical students, in collaboration with Save7, to establish a specialized intensive care unit (ICU) for organ donors at Tygerberg Hospital. This project aims to improve the organ donation process and increase the number of successful transplants.
You can support Save7 by registering as an organ donor, volunteering in our awareness campaigns, participating in support groups, or making a donation to fund our initiatives. Visit our volunteer page for more information.
Save7 engages with the community through social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, as well as in-person events such as campus health days, community debates, comedy clubs and outreach to schools and rural communities. We also collaborate with radio stations and news outlets to reach a broader audience.
Yes, donations are crucial to keeping our programs running and expanding our reach. Your contributions help provide meals for patients, build systems to increase transplant rates, and sustain our awareness campaigns. In exchange for your contributions you’ll receive a section 18A receipt, as well as a quarterly report of where your donations are going. These will include, but are not limited to: funding ICU creation for organ transplantation, support groups for pre and post transplant patients, funding transplantation syllabus creation and implementation across medical schools and high schools in South Africa, and funding operations for those in need. You have complete control over which of these your contributions can assist, but we recommend the full package to maximize your impact.
We welcome your ideas, questions, feedback, and constructive criticism. You can contact us through email: admin@save7.org or connect with us on Instagram @savesevenlives or LinkedIn @save7.
Organ and tissue donation involves giving organs or tissues from a donor, either living or deceased, to someone in need of a transplant. This act can save or significantly improve the lives of recipients suffering from organ failure or tissue damage.
Any person in good health and free from defined chronic diseases that might adversely affect the recipient can be considered a potential donor. Even individuals with certain medical conditions may still be eligible, as the suitability of organs and tissues is determined at the time of death.
Organs that can be donated include the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. Tissues that can be donated include corneas, skin, bone, tendons, and heart valves. A single donor can save up to seven lives through organ donation and enhance many more through tissue donation.
Organs and tissues are allocated based on medical criteria, including the severity of the recipient’s condition, blood type, tissue match, and waiting time. The allocation process is designed to be fair and equitable, ensuring that organs and tissues go to those most in need and who are the best match.
No, organ and tissue donation does not delay funeral arrangements. The recovery of organs and tissues is carried out with great care and respect, and the donor’s body is returned to the family promptly, allowing for traditional funeral practices, including open-casket ceremonies.
No, the donor and their family do not incur any costs related to the donation process.
